While that may sound true, this argument fails to acknowledge the dark side of narcissistic behaviors and traits. Even in its milder form, a narcissistic trait can be detrimental to a person and those surrounding them. That is the case because narcissists usually prioritize their desires ahead of everyone else, resulting in a lack of empathy and difficulty in establishing and maintaining lasting relationships.

Impact on Relationships

Narcissism can have a detrimental effect on an individual’s professional as well as personal relationships. Narcissists are well-identifiable by their ability to manipulate other people so they can meet their own desires. They engage in grandiose tendencies, such as belittling other people and exaggerating their own achievements so they can feel superior to those surrounding them. Such tendencies often result in unhealthy dynamics that take away trust and build resentment in relationships.

Psychological Burden

Being a narcissist can negatively affect one’s psychological well-being. Although narcissistic people may seem confident, they often have fragile self-esteem. Whenever their self-esteem is questioned or challenged, they end up responding with aggression, anger, or even a deep sense of shame. Their constant need for validation often results in chronic dissatisfaction as well as a continuous search for superiority.

Embracing Humility and Authenticity

As opposed to pursuing ‘healthy narcissism,’ it’s even fulfilling for one to learn how to cultivate humility and authenticity. The former is a trait that encourages self-reflection and being open to feedback. Humility also encourages a person to be willing to learn from other people. Authenticity involves acknowledging one’s true strengths as well as weaknesses. As such, an authentic person is always striving to make genuine connections with other people. This individual is true to themselves and accepts the fact that he or she needs to continue working on themselves so they can become better.

Even though self-love and confidence are crucial for any individual, being a narcissist does not in any way reflect genuine self-love. As stated earlier, narcissistic behaviors, no matter how mild they may appear, can be detrimental to an individual and those around them. For that reason, to avoid these self-centered tendencies, an individual must learn to make genuine connections with other people and must not view themselves as superior to others. Genuine relationships are built on authenticity, empathy, and humility, which are all crucial to establishing meaningful connections.
